What is an llms.txt file?
An llms.txt file is a plain-text, Markdown-formatted file placed at the root of your domain that gives AI models a curated, machine-readable map of your most important content. Where robots.txt tells crawlers what they cannot access, llms.txt tells AI systems what matters most — your key docs, guides, and pages, each with a short description.
An honest note: independent studies have found no measurable AI-citation lift from having an llms.txt file — major AI engines do not yet consume it at retrieval. It is harmless to have, cheap to maintain, and may matter more as the convention matures, so generating one is reasonable housekeeping. But it is not a citation lever.
